Energy Efficient Home – There’s a number of things you can do to make your home more energy efficient and better for the environment. There’s lots you can do that won’t cost you a penny, while other things will need some investment. We provide a home health check to help you decide which energy efficiency steps you can take to suit your needs and reduce your energy bills.
Home insulation. A typical house with no insulation will lose 25% through the roof and 33% of heat through walls. With good insulation, you can save as much as £930 a year on heating bills.
Energy efficient lighting – If you replaced every bulb in your home with LED bulbs of the same brightness, you could save around £35 per year on your electricity bill.
Energy efficient appliances – Small changes you can start today:
- Switch off from the mains to save. Familiar with the red ‘standby’ light? You might be surprised to learn that the average UK household spends around £30 per year on their appliances left on standby.
- Fully load your dishwasher. Always remember that you use the same amount of energy whether you load one cup or all the cutlery used to serve a Sunday roast in the dishwasher.
- Dial down the degrees on your clothes wash. Next time you put clothes in the washing machine, set the wash to 30° to save 40% of electricity.
- Hang your clothes out to dry. Hanging your clothes out to dry is more energy-efficient than a tumble dryer and can save you up to £30 per year.
- Clean and defrost your fridge-freezer. Remember to defrost and clean your fridge-freezer regularly – this will help your appliance to work more efficiently.
